Floods and landslides in the Indonesian island of Java have killed 10 people and more deaths are expected.

According to a report by Al Jazeera, Indonesian authorities said that floods have affected several villages in the mountainous region after a week of rain in Java, and rescue workers have recovered 10 bodies.

Lt. Col. Yudi Hariyanto, who is leading relief efforts in Sukabumi, said that rains that started last week have increased the flow of water in rivers and affected more than 170 villages in Sukabumi district in South Java province.

He said that trees were uprooted in the said village, due to landslides and floods, there is danger everywhere.

He said that 172 villages were destroyed by landslides, floods and storms and more than 3,000 citizens had to move to temporary shelters built by the government.

Officials have warned that more than 1,000 people are at risk as more than 400 houses are unable to withstand the extreme weather conditions.

He said that 31 bridges, 71 roads, 1,332 acres of rice fields and 1,170 houses have been destroyed due to floods and landslides caused by rain.

The local disaster management agency said that 3,300 houses and buildings were also damaged in other areas due to bad weather.
