Surgeons of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) performed a long successful surgery on a 16-year-old patient under the supervision of a Turkish doctor.
According to Express News, the country’s first total arch replacement with frozen elephant trunk technique surgery on a 16-year-old patient from Khairpur was successfully completed after a 16-hour long operation at the National Heart Institute.
This surgery is performed to repair the aorta, a large vessel that leaves the heart.
In this operation, doctors remove the damaged part and insert an artificial vessel so that the blood flow returns to normal.
According to NICVD spokesperson, this extremely complex and rare operation was performed under the supervision of Turkey’s world-renowned cardiovascular surgeon Prof. Orse Kızıl Tepe, who along with NICVD’s team of expert doctors Dr. Khuzima Tariq, Prof. Asad Bilal Awan, Dr. Fahad (Trauma Center Karachi) and Prof. Amin M. Khwaja (Anaesthesiologist) achieved this historic success.
According to NICVD, the patient’s condition is now out of danger and he is recovering rapidly.
The cost of this operation is around 60 lakh rupees, but due to the support of the Sindh government, it was carried out completely free of charge.
Turkish Professor Orse Kizil Tepe said that it is an honor to work with the expert team of NICVD, this rare surgery requires extreme precision and coordination and NICVD has proved that Pakistan has now joined the ranks of the few countries in the world where such complex cardiovascular surgeries are possible.
Dr. Khuzima Tariq said that the first successful total arch replacement with modified frozen elephant trunk technique in Pakistan is a milestone for NICVD. This feat has taken the standard of cardiac care in the country to new heights.
