Afghan, Indian social media accounts behind anti-Pakistan disinformation campaign: NSA

National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf on Wednesday  make clear the “information warfare” Pakistan is confronted with,  which has been fuelled by anti-state disinformation campaigns being run by Afghan and Indian social media accounts.

Yusuf shared knowledge pertaining to anti-Pakistan social media tendencies that have been launched between 2019 and 2021, the vast majority of which have been traced to India and Afghanistan, with the goal of working a “targeted, deliberate and conscious disinformation campaign against Pakistan”

He stated he needs to talk of Afghanistan specifically, the place the Taliban and the federal government are at struggle.

He stated the federal government’s social media groups and assume tanks have labored extensively to collect proof that reveals that social media accounts “from Afghanistan and India are being used repeatedly to malign Pakistan”.

Yusuf stated that the majority just lately a #SanctionPakistan pattern unfold on-line and it merited an investigation to see whether or not it was natural.

The NSA went on to say that apart from this, there are efforts responsible Pakistan for all of the failures that amassed within the 20-year-long struggle in Afghanistan.

He stated that as US troops started to withdraw from Afghanistan and the Taliban took management of cities and provincial capitals, “there was a growing narrative against Pakistan with the aim to save themselves from being blamed for their own failures”.

“And it is very unfortunate that some high level officials in the Afghan government are part of this, some of which have come forth as well,” he stated.

He stated “a lot of accounts have links to the state” and thru India as effectively “a very well coordinated campaign is being run against Pakistan”.

“We will expose all these truths, not through fake news but through data and facts. We will form a narrative to tell the world what is being done with Pakistan.”

The NSA then proceeded to point out a couple of slides, one in all which was a timeline from 2019 onwards, and others, which confirmed how, as issues grew extra intense in Afghanistan, hashtags in opposition to Pakistan popped up.

Yusuf stated there are 5 broad themes that may be seen within the tendencies:

  1. Discredit Pakistan authorities, and particularly Pakistan Army.
  2. Fan fictitious sub-nationalism.
  3. Directly goal CPEC by way of hybrid warfare.
  4. Push Pakistan into the FATF blacklist.
  5. Blame Pakistan for the chaos in Afghanistan.

’30-40% exercise comes from bots’

The NSA stated that an vital factor to notice is the usage of “bots” which push tendencies artificially.

“Unfortunately, within Pakistan, people who are unaware, who think this is taking place organically, end up retweeting these hashtags. They think this is a natural, organic thing.

“Plenty of the movies, let me inform you, are 5 years previous, 10 years previous, however as a result of they swimsuit the worldwide media’s narrative proper now, are being unfold as if they’re present,” Yusuf said.

He said that 30-40% of the activity is through these bots.

The #SanctionPakistan trend

Speaking in greater depth of the #SanctionPakistan trend, he said that he has just come from the US, and “neither is there such discuss, neither is it true or with none advantage”.

“So I urge our individuals to please know this: there isn’t a motive for such a factor. We have constructive discussions underway with each vital nation.”

He said that around 9th and 10th August this trend saw a sharp rise and people were left shocked but “the reality is that the US, that had invested a trillion {dollars} into the struggle, merely wished to now not combat it”.

“So is that this our drawback, or theirs?”

Yusuf also rubbished the notion that Pakistan has been supporting the Taliban, saying that “if one seems to be on the areas they’ve captured, they’re so distant from right here that it could take at the very least 10 days to get there”.

“So please, there should be some sense earlier than one talks about such issues.”

‘Targeted, deliberate, conscious’ disinformation campaign against Pakistan

Yusuf then sought to address the media in English for international audiences.

“We have simply summarised for the viewers and the press, a focused, deliberate and acutely aware disinformation marketing campaign in opposition to Pakistan, instantly linked to accounts in Afghanistan and India, some sadly linked to the state equipment that are continuously attempting to malign Pakistan within the worldwide enviornment, discrediting the Pakistan authorities and Army, speaking about fictitious sub-nationalism, focusing on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and attempting to place all blame of what’s taking place in Afghanistan on Pakistan,” said the NSA.

“Ladies and gents, I need to remind you Pakistan is a sufferer of the struggle in Afghanistan: 80,000 plus casualties, $150 billion {dollars} misplaced within the financial system. Stop blaming the sufferer. The failures are within the 20 years of what occurred in Afghanistan. Please look inward. This is not going to work. Because the form of knowledge we are actually displaying you, by way of knowledge evaluation and forensics, is irrefutable,” he continued.

“We will hold doing this as a result of we all know what sort of disinformation marketing campaign is going on simply to absolve the Afghan management of their very own failures and those that put in billions and billions of {dollars} into Afghanistan,” Yusuf asserted.

He said this information warfare is a “key pillar” of the hybrid warfare against Pakistan but the country now has the capability to demonstrate “with none doubt” what is happening against Pakistan.

‘Real tragedy’ in all this

Yusuf said the “actual tragedy” in all of this is that the world, rather than focusing on putting all its efforts being a political settlement in Afghanistan — which is Pakistan’s priority and effort — “many in positions of accountability” are trying to “shift the blame”, trying to create such disinformation campaigns.

‘Please do not believe everything on social media’

He urged his fellow Pakistanis to not believe everything on social media. “Please test and confirm earlier than you see a pattern moving into a selected course.”

“Our safety forces, safety equipment and authorities is vigilant and InshaAllah we’re protected, and can stay protected. There is nothing to fret about however this faux information disinformation marketing campaign is happening and we is not going to shrink back from declaring who’s doing this,” Yusuf ended by saying.

‘India biggest hand behind anti-state social media trends’

Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry, meanwhile, shed light on India’s involvement in the disinformation campaign.

“India’s is the largest hand within the social media tendencies in opposition to Pakistan,” he said, adding that it used fake social media accounts for the purpose.

Citing the example of Senior Pakhtunkhwa Milli Awami Party leader Usman Kakar, who he said died due to a brain hemorrhage, the minister said that India ran fake social media campaigns against his death as well.

“Some 2,000 tweets have been posted from Indian accounts over his loss of life,” Chaudhry said.

He also spoke of how PTI member Zulfi Bukhari was accused of covertly visiting Israel. “Israel ran a social media pattern concerning this which noticed 10,000 tweets posted.”

The information minister said that the PML-N media team and JUI-F “additionally participated on this pattern with full zeal”.

He said that all the discord between groups in Pakistan stems from “overseas involvement”.

“Social media accounts from overseas are concerned in makes an attempt to fan sectarian hatred.”

Chaudhry further said that using the Noor Mukadam murder, Indian TV channels uploaded several hours of videos in a bid to defame Pakistan.

“An enormous media struggle has been launched in opposition to Pakistan by way of faux information,” he warned.
