China Bangladesh Relation: Amidst the dispute with India, the closeness between China and Bangladesh seems to be increasing. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain has reached China on Monday (January 20, 2025). Tauheed Hussain also met Foreign Minister Wang Yi as soon as he reached China. In the meeting, China’s Xi Jinping government has decided to provide major relief to the Yunus government of Bangladesh.
According to the decision of the Chinese government, the period for repayment of the loan given to Bangladesh has been increased to 30 years instead of 20. Not only has the loan repayment period been extended but there has also been talk of reducing the interest rates. Along with this, commitment has also been expressed for China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) plan.
Bangladesh had appealed to China
After the meeting with the Chinese Foreign Minister, an official statement was also issued by Bangladesh Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain, which said, “Foreign Minister Tauheed Hussain has appealed to China to reduce the interest rate of the loan taken by 2-3%. It should be reduced from 1% to 1%. Along with this, the period for repayment of the loan taken should be increased to 30 years instead of 20 years. Because Bangladesh’s previous record regarding loan repayment has been good and that is why China has accepted the appeal to extend the loan repayment period and has also assured to try to reduce the interest rates.
What things does the Chinese government want to work on with Bangladesh?
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, after meeting Tauheed Hussain, said that China will continue to support the economic and social development of Bangladesh. Considering the present circumstances of Bangladesh, it will adopt such a path for development which will be in its interest. Wang Yi said that the Chinese government wants to establish friendship with Bangladesh, work together on strategic dialogue and many projects including the Belt and Road Initiative.
