Bangladesh Against India Comment: Bangladesh has reacted strongly to the condemnation of India over the demolition of the historic residence of Bangladesh founder Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Dhaka. Describing the incident as an internal matter of the country, the interim government of Bangladesh said that India’s comment is unexpected and unfair.

The dispute began when on the night of Wednesday (5 February), thousands of protesters set fire to Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence, 32 Dhanmandi located in Dhaka. Wasted him badly. This house was a symbol of the liberation struggle of Bangladesh, from where Sheikh Mujib announced the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. It was later converted into a monument.

India’s condemnation and Bangladesh’s response
India had expressed deep concern over the incident and called it a “incident of barbarity”. India’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal had said, “Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence was a symbol of the brave resistance of the people of Bangladesh and it is sad to destroy it.”

However, the government of Bangladesh strongly criticized India’s comment, calling it an internal matter. Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said, “India’s Foreign Ministry’s comment is related to internal affairs of Bangladesh and it is unfair. We hope that other countries will not interfere in Bangladesh’s internal affairs.”

Impact on India-Bangladesh relations
The government of Bangladesh has earlier expressed displeasure over the comment made by India about Sheikh Hasina’s speech. Bangladesh warned that such comments could have an impact on the bilateral relations of India-Bangladesh. Amidst the current dispute, the possibility of impacting the relationship between the two countries has increased.

Why is this issue important for India and Bangladesh?
Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s house has been an important symbol of the national consciousness of Bangladesh and its freedom struggle. The incident of destroying it has become a matter of concern not only within Bangladesh but also internationally. India, which played an important role in the 1971 Bangladesh war, publicly expressed its dissatisfaction over the incident. However, the government of Bangladesh believes that this is completely its internal matter and the intervention of outside countries in it is unfair.
