Bangladesh Removes Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Image from Currency Notes Bangbandhu

Bangladesh Currency: The Bangladesh government has decided to remove the photographs of the country’s Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman from currency notes. Sheikh Mujib’s picture was continuously present on the currency notes since the establishment of Bangladesh in 1972. Bangladesh Bank’s Executive Editor Husneara Shikha has confirmed this. He said, “We will issue new notes within the next six months.”

This decision is a major change for the Bangladesh government, because the name and image of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had remained as the national symbol of Bangladesh for many decades. This step is being considered an important step towards changing the political and social identity associated with them.

Glimpse of religious and cultural symbols in the new notes

Additionally, Bangladesh Bank has also said that the new notes will feature religious structures and Bengali traditions, inspired by “graffiti” made during the July protests. During student protests in July, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s photographs were removed in what was seen as a “sensitivity” incident by the government of Bangladesh.

Criticism and controversy of Sheikh Hasina

Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina recently accused Mohammad Yunus, the chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, that he was involved in “ethnic violence” and did not protect minorities in Bangladesh. In response, Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal has described Hasina’s statement as “hate speech” and Bangladeshi leaders have condemned an ongoing propaganda campaign against the Yunus government.

All these incidents reveal a deeper picture of political disagreement and power struggle in Bangladesh, where efforts are being made to redefine the identity and history of Bangladesh.
