Bangladesh-India Relations: Indian High Commissioner Prannoy Verma was summoned to the office of the Ministry of External Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday (December 03, 2024). This incident happened a day after an unruly mob broke the security barricade of the Assistant High Commission of the neighboring country in Agartala.
On Tuesday, the government’s legal advisor said the Agartala incident was a “failure” of the Indian government. Legal advisor Asif Nazrul wrote in a Facebook post, “India should understand that this is not Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh.” A day earlier, thousands of people had demonstrated near the Bangladesh mission in Agartala, protesting the arrest of Chinmoy Krishna Das as well as attacks on the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Advisor on Foreign Affairs Tauheed Hussain, in his brief remarks to the media on the visit of the Indian envoy, told that “he (Verma) has been asked to come.” Government news agency Bangladesh Samvad Sanstha (BSS) said the Indian envoy entered the Foreign Ministry at 4 pm. BSS said that acting Foreign Secretary Riyaz Hamidullah summoned the Indian High Commissioner.
