Bangladesh Teesta Project: Bangladesh is planning China’s participation in the Teesta Project, which can have a serious impact on India’s security and strategic interests. The decision to include China in this project can be taken by the interim government of Bangladesh. According to the Telegraph report, China has proposed a master plan for the protection and management of the Teesta River, which has been approved by Bangladesh. This step can cause a major security concern for India, especially due to China’s possible presence on the Teesta River near sensitive areas such as Siliguri Corridor.
The source of the Teesta River is from Sikkim, India and this river enters Bangladesh via North Bengal. The dispute between Bangladesh and India over the distribution of Teesta has been going on since 2011. However, now the interim government of Bangladesh is planning to include China in this project. Bangladesh recently held a public hearing in the name of “Teesta Nee Koronio”, in which the Chinese Master Plan was discussed.
Security concerns and possible threats for India
The biggest concern for India is that this project will be close to Siliguri Corridor with China’s participation under the Teesta Project. The Siliguri Corridor, also known as “Chicken Neck”, is strategically very important for India, as this corridor connects the northeastern part of the country to the rest of India. If China makes its presence in this region, then it can be a big threat to India’s national security.
Increasing impact of Bangladesh-China relations
Sheikh Hasina’s government had previously kept China away from the Teesta Project, but after his withdrawal from power, Mohammad Yunus -led interim government has changed its stand towards China. According to Bangladeshi media reports, the purpose of connecting China to this project is to construct the drainage system, embankments and satellite townships on the banks of the river. The cost of this project is around $ 1 billion and aims to complete it by 2025.
India’s security and diplomatic challenges
If this project progresses with China, India will need to make major changes in its security strategies. India will have to intensify its diplomatic efforts to protect the Siliguri Corridor and to protect the northeast India. Apart from this, the growing relations between Bangladesh and China can also increase diplomatic challenges for India, especially when Bangladesh is planning to pressurize India through this project.
China’s participation in Teesta Project
China’s participation in Bangladesh’s Teesta Project may pose a serious threat to India’s national security. India will have to strengthen its safety and diplomatic efforts to face the challenges arising from this project, so that stability in this sensitive field remains.
