Barshim, Tamberi ‘love-in’ takes one other leap on podium


The camaraderie between Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi continued throughout the Olympic males’s excessive soar victory ceremony on Monday, a day after the pair opted to share the gold medal.

Both Barshim, 30, and the 29-year-old Tamberi cleared 2.37 metres on Sunday night. Facing the prospect of a jump-off to resolve the winner, they persuaded organisers to allow them to share the triumph.

Videos and photos of the nice mates clasping arms, whooping for pleasure and embracing one another have gone viral on social media.

After climbing on to the rostrum collectively, Barshim and Tamberi introduced the gold medals to one another amid extra hugs and switched locations to face their flags when every nationwide anthem was performed.

“He is one of my best friends, not only on the track, but outside the track,” Barshim mentioned on Sunday.

“We work together. This is a dream come true. It is the true spirit, the sportsman spirit, and we are here delivering this message.”

It was the primary time for the reason that 1912 Olympics {that a} gold medal was shared in athletics – in each pentathlon and decathlon on the Stockholm Games.
