Botswana says it has discovered the world’s ‘third largest’ diamond

The 1,098-carat diamond is the largest stone of gem high quality to be discovered within the historical past of the Debswana firm.

Botswanan diamond agency Debswana has mentioned it unearthed a 1,098-carat stone that it described because the third-largest of its type on the planet.

The stone, discovered on June 1, was proven on Wednesday to President Mokgweetsi Masisi within the capital, Gaborone.

“It is believed to be the third-largest gem-quality find in the world,” mentioned Debswana Managing Director Lynette Armstrong.

The “rare and extraordinary stone … means so much in the context of diamonds and Botswana,” she mentioned. “It brings hope to the nation that is struggling.”

It can be the largest stone of gem high quality to be discovered within the historical past of the corporate, a three way partnership between the federal government and international diamond large De Beers.

The largest diamond ever found on the planet was the three,106-carat Cullinan, present in South Africa in 1905.

The second-largest was 1,109-carat Lesedi La Rona – a diamond the dimensions of a tennis ball, found at Karowe, northeastern Botswana, in 2015.

Botswana is Africa’s main diamond producer.
