On US President Donald Trump’s tariff policy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has warned that he will also impose retaliatory tariffs and American consumers will also have to pay higher prices. On Thursday (January 23, 2025), Donald Trump said that he is planning to impose heavy tariffs on Mexico and Canada. Even during the US elections, he had said several times in his election campaign that if he came to power, he would impose heavy tariffs on China, Canada and Mexico. Although, this has not happened yet, but Trump can do this from February 1.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Donald Trump said that a 25 percent tariff could be imposed on Canada and Mexico from February 1. Justin Trudeau also hit back at his statement and said that whenever Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Canada, Canada will also impose taxes in response, which will increase the expenses of American consumers.
Speaking to reporters in Ottawa, Trudeau said, ‘Whether they impose it on January 20 or February 1, February 15 or April 1… whenever they impose tariffs, Canada will also respond and impose tariffs and everything will be fine for American consumers. The price will increase. I think Trump would like that.
Canada is America’s second largest trading partner after Mexico. Every day, $2.7 billion worth of goods are supplied from Canada to 36 American states. One-fourth of the oil consumed in America every day comes from Canada. Daniel Smith, premier of the oil-rich Canadian province of Alberta, has said that if the US imposes tariffs on oil coming from Canada, then Americans in some states may have to spend more than $ 1 per gallon for gas.
Justice Trudeau also said that the US should work with Canada on the goods and minerals it needs to provide economic growth and Trump has promised to do so. Canada has 34 such important minerals and metals, which America also wants to take. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel, uranium and aluminium.
Justin Trudeau said he wants the US to work with Canada on energy and minerals, but if Donald Trump wants to move forward with tariffs, we are prepared to respond strongly. Justin Trudeau said that if the tariff is imposed, it will be bad for the Canadian people, but American consumers will also not be able to escape it.
