CDS Gen Bipin Rawat, spouse, 11 others killed in IAF helicopter crash

Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat and his spouse are among the many 13 useless after the Indian Air Force helicopter they had been travelling in crashed near Coonoor in Tamil Nadu on Wednesday.

The IAF confirmed the information in a tweet Wednesday night.

There had been 14 individuals on board, together with the crew.

The accident happened within the Katteri-Nanchappanchathram space near Coonoor within the hilly Nilgiris district reportedly on account of low visibility amid foggy circumstances.

The IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter was airborne from Sulur for Wellington, the place CDS Gen Rawat, together with Chief of Army Staff MM Naravane, was slated to take part in an occasion on the Defence Staff College.

The crash occurred at a distance of about 10 km from the helipad the place it was to land.

“An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident,” the Indian Air Force tweeted shortly after the accident.

TV visuals confirmed the chopper in flames, apparently underneath the impression of the crash. Rescue personnel, together with Army personnel, had been seen concerned in clearing the world.

Meanwhile, the defence minister had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the chopper crash.
