
US Treasury Breach: America’s Finance Minister Janet Yellen’s computer has been made the victim of a major cyber attack. In fact, apart from Jellett, Chinese hackers also targeted the computers of his two senior assistants, Deputy Secretary Wally Adeyemo and Acting Under Secretary Brad Smith. Quoting sources related to the cyber attack, Bloomberg said in its report, “Hackers accessed at least 50 unclassified files from the computer of the US Finance Minister.”
According to the report, on Thursday (January 16, 2025), US Treasury Department spokesperson Chris Hayden has currently refused to comment on this matter.
Cyber attack being linked with Chinese government
This cyber attack in America is being linked with the Chinese government. According to Bloomberg’s report, the hackers focused on Treasury’s sanctions, intelligence gathering and Treasury’s involvement in international affairs. But he did not access the department’s email system or classified information.
Hackers accessed more than 3,000 files
US Treasury Department officials briefed Capitol Hill lawmakers and their aides on Wednesday (January 15) and Thursday (January 16) about the hacking incident, while the Senate Finance Committee briefed President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Finance Secretary Scott Scott. Apart from this, the report said that this security breach was discovered when software contractor BeyondTrust Corp informed the Treasury on December 8, 2024 that hackers had used the company’s network to infiltrate the department.
