Cillian Murphy confirmed he will not appear in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming adaptation of The Odysseydespite having collaborated with the director on six previous films, including 2023’s Oppenheimerwhich won both men Academy Awards.
Speaking at the Toronto International Film Festival while promoting his new film SteveMurphy addressed the project with humour and admiration.
“Is there a trailer? I have ROMO: Relief of missing out,” Murphy joked. “No, I can’t wait to see it. If any director in the world could tackle The Odysseyit’s going to be Christopher Nolan. I am so excited to see it. He is one in a million. He’s been a huge part of my life as an actor. I can’t wait to see what he does with it.”
Murphy was joined at TIFF by Steve director Tim Mielants, writer Max Porter and co-stars Tracey Ullman, Jay Lycurgo and Simbi Ajikawo.
The film premiered on September 5 and earned praise from critics who highlighted Murphy’s nuanced portrayal of a reform school teacher and commended the actor’s continued commitment to challenging roles.
Murphy was more guarded when asked about the long-anticipated Peaky Blinders film, offering only, “Oh, I can’t tell you.”
Although Murphy is absent from The Odysseyhis respect for Nolan’s vision remains clear, as he expressed anticipation for how the director will bring the ancient epic to life.
