The household of a late good friend of Dave Chappelle is defending the comic following controversial feedback he made in regards to the trans neighborhood in his most up-to-date Netflix particular, The Closer.

Daphne Dorman, a trans girl and a fellow comic who lived within the San Francisco space, struck up a friendship with the Chappelle Show alum previous to her demise by suicide in 2019. Dorman was referenced in Chappelle’s 2019 Netflix particular for having defended him following earlier feedback he made in regards to the trans neighborhood.

Dorman’s sisters shared their help for Chappelle to The Daily Beast. Over textual content, Dorman’s sister Becky wrote to the outlet, “Daphne was in awe of Dave’s graciousness. She did not find his jokes rude, crude, off-coloring, off-putting, anything. She thought his jokes were funny. Daphne understood humor and comedy—she was not offended. Why would her family be offended?”

Dorman’s youthful sister Brandy agreed with the assertion and referred to as Chappelle an “LGBTQ ally.” 

Following the discharge of his Netflix particular earlier this week, Chappelle obtained criticism from the trans neighborhood — in addition to social media at giant — after he made jokes in regards to the so-called “cancellation” of Harry Potter creator JK Rowling, who was labeled a “TERF” (trans-exclusionary radical feminist) following a number of feedback she made about gender on Twitter.

“They canceled JK Rowling – my God,” he mentioned on stage. “Effectually she said gender was fact, the trans community got mad as shit, they started calling her a Terf…I’m Team TERF.”

He went on to say that “gender is a fact” and that “every human being in this room, every human being on Earth, had to pass through the legs of a woman to be on Earth.”

Multiple activist teams, together with GLAAD, criticized Chappelle’s feedback in regards to the trans neighborhood, with many stating that he has made comparable jokes at their expense over his decades-long profession. Dear White People showrunner Jaclyn Moore, who’s trans, referred to as Chappelle out on social media for perpetuating concepts which will result in extra violence towards trans folks, in addition to slammed Netflix for platforming the comic.
