Federal govt okays ordinance ending HEC autonomy

The federal authorities has determined to formally finish Higher Education Commission’s (HEC) autonomy by making it a subordinate to the Ministry of Education.

All future selections of the HEC will now permitted by the Ministry of Education. The federal cupboard has permitted an ordinance on HEC.

According to the ordinance, the appointment of the HEC chairperson shall be for 2 years and the members of HEC shall be appointed for 4 years.

It has been renamed because the HEC Amendment Ordinance, 2021. President Arif Alvi has permitted the ordinance.

The HEC was established in 2002 as an autonomous establishment to make sure the promotion of high quality training with none political interference.

Even although the HEC is predicated in Islamabad, 4 of the 18 members of the HEC Commission signify the provinces whereas two signify the federation. Therefore, curbing the autonomy of the HEC could hurt the rising cooperation between the HEC and provincial larger training set-ups.
