For the first time, the World Monuments Fund has declared a site off Earth as unsafe.
The World Monuments Fund (WMF) is an international non-profit organization that identifies 25 endangered cultural heritage sites every two years.
The agency included the moon in its 2025 watch list to usher in an era of new space technology, as there are more than 90 historical sites related to human presence on the moon.
Among these places is Tranquility Base, where humans first set foot on the moon. The landing site preserves astronaut Neil Armstrong’s shoe prints as well as more than 100 other artifacts from the Apollo 11 mission.
The institution’s president and CEO, Benedict de Montler, said that for the first time an extraterrestrial site has been included in the list to reflect the urgent need to identify and preserve artifacts that could be used by humanity beyond Earth. Witness the first steps.
