France Politics Michel Barnier government fall down after 3 month by No Confidence Motion

France Politics: A major change took place in political history in France on Wednesday (December 4), when opposition MPs toppled Michel Barnier’s government. The Barnier government lost a no-confidence motion in parliament. This is the first time in the last 60 years that a government has been ousted from power in this manner.

331 MPs voted in favor of this no-confidence motion presented by the leftist The New Popular Front (NFP) coalition, whereas only 288 votes were required to topple the government. The Barnier government remained in power for only three months. Now Michel Barnier will have to submit his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron.

Barnier government was in minority
No party could get majority in the general elections held in July. President Macron formed a minority government under the leadership of Michel Barnier in September. 73-year-old Barnier was trying to run the government in coalition despite not having the majority.

Why did the MPs turn against the government?
The main reason for the no-confidence motion against the Barnier government was the recently presented social security budget. In this budget, a decision was taken to increase taxes and cut expenses, which was strongly opposed by the left and right parties. The government decided to pass this budget without the voting of Parliament, which made the situation more tense. After this, the opposition parties announced to bring a no-confidence motion against the government, due to which the Barnier government ultimately had to face defeat.

Questions raised on Macron’s strategy
The ouster of Michel Barnier government from power in France in three months may increase political instability. At present, questions are being raised on President Macron’s strategy all over the world.
