Green aviation: Electric powered aircraft trialled over Orkney

Scotland’s first hybrid-electric aircraft has taken to the skies at a brand new take a look at centre in Orkney.

US-based aviation firm Ampaire has changed one of many piston engines of their retrofitted Cessna plane with a compact electrical motor.

Ampaire believes hybrid expertise may pave the best way to flying inter-island and quick haul routes with greener applied sciences.

After preliminary take a look at flights in Hawaii, the plane was shipped to Scotland for its first flight throughout open water. A 90-minute fast cost of the aircraft’s battery can present round an hour of flight.
