Gunmen assault Nigerian jail; 240 inmates freed

Authorities appealed to the general public to supply intelligence that can help in recapturing the escapees.

Heavily armed males raided a jail in southcentral Nigeria and freed 240 inmates – almost everybody within the jail.

The attackers began a gun battle with guards late on Sunday on the medium-security jail at Kabba in Kogi state, southwest of the federal capital Abuja, a spokesman for the Correctional Service stated.

“The medium-security custodial centre in Kabba, Kogi state, has been attacked by yet to be identified gunmen and 240 inmates forcefully released,” spokesman Francis Enobore stated.

He didn’t give particulars on any casualties.

Haliru Nababa, Nigeria’s controller basic of corrections, took cost of an investigation into the assault and ordered all of the inmates to be recaptured.

“He appealed to the general public to provide useful intelligence that will assist in recapturing the escapees to security operatives,” the spokesman stated.

A complete of 294 inmates had been in custody on the time – 224 pre-trial detainees and 70 convicted, the jail service stated. The jail was established in 2008 with a capability of 200 inmates.

Suspects can spend years in pre-trial detention in Nigeria. Human rights teams say prisons are sometimes overcrowded and authorized procedures inefficient.
