India appoints retired General Anil Chauhan as defence chief

NEW DELHI:

The Indian authorities stated on Wednesday that it had appointed Anil Chauhan as its defence chief, to succeed Bipin Rawat, who died in a helicopter crash together with 13 others final December.

Chauhan, 61, served as a lieutenant basic earlier than retiring in May 2021, after commanding the Indian military’s japanese division.

He may even operate as secretary to the division of navy affairs as soon as he takes cost, the federal government stated in a press release.

His appointment comes after months of hypothesis over who could be India’s defence chief, whereas the scenario on the nation’s borders with neighbours China and Pakistan stays tense.

Rawat was appointed as India’s first Chief of Defence Staff by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s authorities in late 2019.

Rawat, his spouse and 12 defence personnel have been en path to a navy employees school in southern India when the air pressure helicopter they have been travelling in went down.
