Syria-based rebel group Al-Nushra Front has captured the country’s capital Damascus and claimed that Bashar al-Assad’s regime has been toppled on their behalf. While giving information today on Sunday (December 8, 2024), Iranian state television said that their embassy in Syria has been attacked. It was told through Iranian TV channel that some unknown attackers had carried out this attack.
The Syrian rebel group al-Nushra Front is also known as Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS). This rebel group first captured the city of Aleppo. After this claimed to capture the cities of Homs and Dara. Finally declared control over the capital Damascus.
Report released after Al Assad left the city
According to the report of news agency IANS, Iran’s government news agency IRNA said that the Army Command issued this statement on Sunday morning after reports of rebel armed groups entering Damascus and Assad leaving the city. Many media outlets, citing rebel forces, reported that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has left the country.
What did PM Al Jalali say after releasing the video?
According to IRNA, Syrian Prime Minister Mohammad Ghazi al-Jalali said that he is ready to hand over the administration of the Arab country to a transitional government. He said in a video, I am in my home and I have not left it and it is because of my connection with this country. Al-Jalali further said that he is ready to cooperate with any leadership chosen by the Syrian people and will not leave his home until a ‘peaceful transition’ is achieved. Al-Jalali appealed to all parties to think “rationally” and said he extended a hand of cooperation to everyone, including members of the opposition.
Offensive campaign against Assad government begins in Idlib
According to reports, armed groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched an offensive against the Assad government in the western province of Idlib on November 27. They initially targeted the rural areas around Idlib and neighboring Aleppo and soon after captured several Syrian cities. HTS, formerly known as Nusra Front, is considered a terrorist organization by many countries.
