Winter Season in Gaza: Winter has set in in Gaza and many of the nearly 2 million people displaced by the 14-month-long war with Israel are struggling to protect themselves from the cold, winter and rain. According to aid workers and local residents in Gaza, people lack blankets, warm clothes and wood for bonfires. At the same time, the condition of the tents and tarpaulins under which people are living has also become bad.
Shadia Ayada, displaced from the southern city of Rafah, lives with her eight children in a dilapidated tent with just a blanket and a hot water bottle. He said that whenever we come to know that there is forecast of strong wind or rain, we feel scared because our tents get blown away due to the wind. The temperature in this area usually remains between 5 to 10 degrees Celsius at night. Due to which children remain at risk of catching cold.
People sleep with children in their lap
Ayada said that when she left her home, her children had only summer clothes. To cope with the cold, he had to borrow warm clothes from his relatives. “People sleep in tents with their children in their arms to protect them from the cold,” said Rida Abu Jarada, a 50-year-old displaced with her family in northern Gaza.
Rats enter the torn tent
Rida said, due to the tent being torn, rats move on us at night, blankets cannot keep us warm. The ground looks as if it is covered with snow. She said, ‘I am afraid that one day I will wake up and some child will be lying dead from cold.’
UN issued warning
Regarding this situation in Gaza, the United Nations (UN) has warned that people living in temporary shelters may not be able to survive in winter. The UN said on Tuesday (December 17) that at least 9,45,000 people in Gaza needed winter-related items.
