Chris Columbus, the original director of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secretshas ruled out any possibility of returning to the Wizarding World.
Speaking to The Times of LondonColumbus said it is “impossible” for him to come back to the franchise because of the political complications surrounding JK Rowling and her controversial views.
“It’s never going to happen,” Columbus stated. “It’s gotten so complicated with all the political stuff. Everyone in the cast has their own opinion, which is different from (Rowling’s) opinion, which makes it impossible.”
Columbus confirmed he has not spoken to Rowling in more than a decade but continues to keep in touch with stars of the series, including Daniel Radcliffe. “I just spoke to him a few days ago,” Columbus said, adding that he still shares a strong bond with the main cast members.
The director also commented on Rowling’s remarks about trans identity, describing her position as “very sad.” He noted: “I like to sometimes separate the artist from the art, I think that’s important to do. It’s unfortunate, what’s happened. I certainly don’t agree with what she’s talking about. But it’s just sad, it’s very sad.”
Meanwhile, HBO is preparing a television reboot of Harry Potter. Francesca Gardiner will serve as showrunner with Mark Mylod as director. HBO confirmed Rowling has been closely involved in selecting the creative team, though executives stated her views have not influenced casting or staffing decisions.
