India US Defence Deal: US President Joe Biden has given a huge gift to India before ending his tenure. He on Monday (December 2, 2024) approved the sale of supplies related to MH-60R multi-mission helicopter equipment worth $1.17 billion. This deal will help India increase its submarine capabilities, which is being considered a major step towards maintaining strategic stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
DACA said that this proposed sale will strengthen the US-India strategic relationship. This will prove helpful in improving the security of a major defense partner. It will support America’s foreign policy and national security objectives, becoming a vital force for political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions.
MH-60R helicopter, the new strength of the Indian Navy
The MH-60R helicopter is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, making it highly effective for anti-submarine warfare (ASW) and anti-surface warfare (ASuW). The helicopter is equipped with advanced digital sensors such as multi-mode radar, dipping sonar and electro-optical/infrared cameras. It has advanced weapon systems like air-to-ground missiles and rockets.
Datalink and Aircraft Survivability System
This system enables the helicopter to operate even in difficult conditions. The helicopters have been specially customized for the Indian Navy, involving collaboration between Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL).

The purchase of MH-60R helicopters will increase the capability of the Indian Navy, which will help in maintaining security and stability in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia. The US has described this deal as important for its foreign policy and national security objectives. For the Indian Navy, this deal will strengthen India’s maritime power. There are 330 MH-60r in operation worldwide. Including the Indian Navy, these helicopters are in operation with the US Navy, Royal Danish Navy, Royal Australian Navy and Royal Saudi Naval forces. These helicopters are also designed for search, rescue, medical evacuation, command, control and vertical replenishment missions.
