John McAfee’s official X, formerly Twitter, account caused a stir late Wednesday night with a cryptic post that left followers both confused and intrigued.
The message read, “I’m back with AIntivirus. An AI version of myself. You didn’t think I would miss this cycle did you?”
The post included a link to the “AIntivirus” website, as well as a warning: “Do not fall for scam tokens. This is the only official AIntivirus CA:” followed by a crypto wallet address.
Additionally, McAfee’s widow, Janice Elizabeth McAfee, was tagged, as well as the AIntivirus X account, which has over 7,000 followers.
The post was accompanied by an AI-generated image of McAfee, creating further mystery about the nature of the message.
Shortly afterward, another post clarified, “John’s account has not been hacked. This is the real deal. More information forthcoming.”
Despite McAfee’s death in 2021, his official X account still boasts over 1 million followers. The mysterious posts triggered a range of reactions from his followers, with some speculating that the account had been hacked, while others expressed surprise.
McAfee, a British-American entrepreneur and former presidential candidate, was best known for founding McAfee Associates in 1987 and creating the first commercial antivirus software. In his later years, he became an outspoken critic of his company’s software and government surveillance. His legal issues, including charges of tax evasion, culminated in his arrest in 2020. McAfee was found dead in a Spanish prison in 2021, an apparent suicide.
