Lahore High Court summoned post -mortem reports of prisoners killed in prisons
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aaliyah Neelam heard the petition regarding the halt and facilitating facilities of the prisoners in the jails. The court summoned the post -mortem reports of the prisoners killed in the jails and all the documents related to them.
Chief Justice Aaliyah Neelam said that three prisons besides separate women’s prisons in Lahore are in the final stages of construction. Many things are going to happen yesterday.
The IG prisons told the court that in 2024, a total of 68 prisoners were killed in both prisons in Lahore. A total of 49 prisoners died while one prisoner committed suicide.
The petitioner’s lawyer took the stand that 6,000 and 600 prisoners were kept in the district jail of 2,000 prisoners. There are 3,810 prisoners in the Central Jail with a 2,360 capacity. There are reports of torture of prisoners in Punjab jails. Prisoners are kept in prisons like sheep goats and they face inadequate facilities. Providing protection and facilities to prisoners is a requirement of domestic and international law. The court should order the jail authorities to protect the basic rights of the prisoners.
The Lahore High Court adjourned the hearing till February 3.
