Gloria Romero, known as the “Queen of Philippine Cinema,” passed away peacefully on Saturday at the age of 91.
The news was confirmed by her daughter, Maritess Gutierrez, in a heartfelt statement shared on social media.
“It is with great sadness to announce the passing of my beloved Mother, Gloria Galla Gutierrez aka Gloria Romero, who peacefully joined our Creator earlier today,” Gutierrez wrote. She expressed gratitude for the public’s support, prayers, and condolences, adding, “She will surely be missed dearly.”
Romero, Born Gloria Borrego Galla, began her acting career at 16 during the Golden Era of Philippine Cinema. She starred in iconic films subject as ‘Cofradia,’ ‘pilya,’ ‘desphachadora,’ and ‘Dalagang Ilocana,’ earnss award. Later in her career, she Continued to Impress with standout rolls in ‘number the bituin in the sky’ with nora aunor, as well as in ‘tanging thanks,’ ‘Magnifico,’ and ‘rainbow sunset.
Romero also made her mark on television, portraying memorable characters like minerva chavez in ‘palibhasa lalake’ and Doña Amparo in ‘Familia Zaragoza. Her final Role was Lola Goreng in ‘daig you ng my grandmother.
A public viewing will be held at Arlington Memorial Chapel, Quezon City, on Monday and Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
