Mohammad Yunus, chief advisor to the interim government of Bangladesh, has termed the skyrocketing economy during Sheikh Hasina government as fake. In an interview given to news agency Reuters, Mohammad Yunus said on Thursday (23 January 2025) that the claims of the country’s economy growing during the government of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina were ‘fake’.
According to statistics, during the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina, there was an unprecedented boom in the economy of Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina has been credited for giving impetus to the country’s economy and textile industry. In 2023, the World Bank described Bangladesh as one of the fastest growing economies in the world.
Yunus’s taunt about Sheikh Hasina
Yunus, who arrived in Davos, Switzerland to attend the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, said on the sidelines of the meeting, “When she came to Davos, she was telling everyone how the country was run. Referring to the situation in Bangladesh, Yunus said, “The whole world is responsible for this situation (of Bangladesh). This is also a lesson for the world. She used to say that ‘our growth rate is the best’, all this is completely It was kind of fake.”
Bangladesh’s chief advisor said, “Since its independence in 1971, Bangladesh was one of the poorest countries, while in 2015 it became a lower-middle income country.”
Yunus told what kind of economy he wants
Nobel laureate, economist and chief advisor Yunus said, “Personally, I do not give much importance to the growth rate. I give importance to the quality of life of the people at the lowest level. So I would like to bring an economy which is based on wealth. Avoids collecting wealth in any one place (equal distribution of wealth among all).”
