Four cops who responded to the Jan. 6 assault on the U.S. Capitol have now died by suicide, the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed on Monday.
Metropolitan Police Officer Kyle DeFreytag was discovered useless at his home final month, the company confirmed to HuffPost. His household later stated the trigger was suicide, Fox5 reported.
DeFreytag was 26.
“I am writing to share tragic news that Officer Kyle DeFreytag of the 5th District was found deceased last evening,” MPD Chief Robert Contee wrote to the division in mid-July, per WUSA. “This is incredibly hard news for us all, and for those that knew him best.”
The division stated DeFreytag responded to the Jan. 6 rebellion and had served with the MPD since November 2016.
The information comes simply hours after the Metropolitan Police Department stated a 3rd officer, Gunther Hashida, was discovered useless in his home on Thursday.
“We are grieving as a Department as our thoughts and prayers are with Officer Hashida’s family and friends,” the division stated, noting he joined in 2003.
Two different officers have died by suicide following the rebellion: Howard Liebengood and Jeffery Smith. Another, Brian Sicknick, died a day after he engaged with rioters whereas responding to the assault.
