Uganda Mpox Virus: Four more people have died due to mpox infection in Uganda in the last five days. With this the total number of dead has now reached 10. With 1,571 confirmed infection cases in the country, the situation is becoming serious. Uganda’s Health Ministry has reported that 19 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, including in Wakiso, Kampala and Lira districts.
Mpox, also known as monkeypox. This is a viral infection that spreads mainly through close contact. Its symptoms include rash, fever, headache, muscle pain, and swollen glands. This disease is caused by monkeypox virus and if not treated on time, it can have serious consequences.
MPox cases increasing in Uganda
Cases of mpox infection are increasing rapidly in Uganda. According to the Health Ministry, with 156 new infection cases recorded last month, the total number of infected people has reached 1,571. With this the number of deaths in the country has increased to 10.
Prevention and Management Measures
The Ugandan government and WHO have jointly taken several measures to stop the spread of MPOX. These include surveillance, case management, organizing health meetings, risk communication and community engagement. Various public awareness campaigns are being run to increase awareness among health workers and the public.
MPOX situation in Africa
WHO has described the situation of MPOX in Africa as particularly worrying. A higher number of cases of infection have been seen in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, and Uganda. In Africa, as of December 15, there have been 13,769 confirmed cases in 20 countries, including 60 deaths.
WHO warning
WHO has warned that reports of the geographical expansion of the Mpox virus outside the DRC continue and it has also been detected in several countries outside Africa. Although the epidemic trend in the DRC has been relatively stable in recent weeks, there is a need to carefully understand the stability and rate of decline, taking into account possible reporting delays.
