M&S stops promoting disposable barbecues throughout UK

Marks & Spencer has stopped promoting disposable barbecues in its shops throughout the UK.

Announcing the move, the grocery store stated it needed “to help protect open spaces and reduce the risk of fires”.

London Fire Brigade, which has been calling for a ban on the sale of disposable barbecues, welcomed the move, saying it was “good news”.

It comes after the UK skilled its hottest day ever on report, with 40C exceeded for the primary time.

Dozens of areas noticed temperatures above the earlier UK report of 38.7C and 15 fireplace providers declared main incidents due to a surge in blazes.

An M&S spokesperson confirmed to the BBC that the move got here into impact earlier this week.

In an announcement, the grocery store stated: “At M&S we want to help protect open spaces and reduce the risk of fires.

“We’d already stopped promoting disposable barbecues near nationwide parks and in London however given the unusually sizzling and dry circumstances, we have taken the precautionary step of eradicating them from sale throughout the UK.”

London Fire Brigade had already warned people against using barbecues in open spaces, grassland or balconies, particularly after the recent heatwave.

Last week, its commissioner Andy Roe called for disposable barbecues to be taken off the shelves across Britain.

It got here after the London Fire Brigade experienced its busiest day since World War Two, dealing with multiple blazes in the record-breaking temperatures.

Welcoming the decision by M&S, London Fire Brigade said: “We wish to work with retailers to cease the sale of disposable barbecues and cut back the chance of harmful grass fires.”

The UK saw record high temperatures on 19 July, with 40C exceeded for the first time.

The two days of extreme temperatures prompted the Met Office to issue a red extreme heat warning for the first time.
