Islamabad:
Due to net metering in the country, a heavy burden of Rs 103 billion has been placed on consumers who have taken electricity from the grid.
The government has begun considering transferring solar (solar) net metering to the grass metering system. In this regard, sources said that in 2021 there were 321 MW of power solar net metering connections, which increased to 3277 MW in 2024 and could increase to 12377 MW by 2034.
According to sources, 80 % of users from Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Peshawar, Sialkot and Rawalpindi have joined the net metering system and so far the number of net metering users has increased to 226440, which is 37. Million power consumers are only 0.6 %.
Due to net metering last year, a heavy burden of Rs 103 billion was placed on the electricity consumers who were receiving electricity from the grid.
Power division sources say a viable plan is under consideration to avoid burden on grid consumers in the future. The government can introduce grass metering by changing the solar (solar) net metering system, after which the purchase of electricity will be Rs 8 to 9 per unit instead of Rs 21 per unit.
Sources say that if the new policy is not brought in time, the current roof top solar policy will increase the burden of Rs 503 billion in the next 10 years.
