Nigeria Tanker Blast: 18 people died and 10 others were injured in an explosion in a petrol tanker in Nigeria. A tanker filled with gasoline lost control on the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway in Enugu State of Nigeria, collided with 17 vehicles and caught fire. The injured people have been admitted to the hospital for treatment.
18 people died in tanker blast
According to Reuters report, a Nigeria Road Safety Corps official said that the brakes of the tanker failed, causing the driver to lose control and the tanker collided with more than a dozen vehicles on the expressway. He said, “10 people have been sent to the hospital and three people are unharmed. 18 people were burnt in such a way that it has become difficult to even recognize them.”
Another accident happened this month
Due to the lack of railway lines for transportation, truck accidents have become common on most major roads in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country. Earlier this month, 98 people were killed when a gasoline tanker exploded in north-central Nigeria. This accident occurred while filling gasoline from one tank to another.
Many Nigerians blame the ongoing economic hardship for the continuing incidents, which have forced people to take desperate measures, including scavenging gasoline from downed tankers. Many people are demanding strict traffic rules to prevent similar disasters.
Demanding increased safety rules
Early in October last year, Nigerian President Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s commitment to rapidly review and enhance fuel transportation safety protocols. The government had directed the police to increase measures like increased patrolling, increased safety rules and other highway safety mechanisms.
