Islamabad:
A hearing was held at the International Court of Justice regarding the responsibilities of states regarding climate change, Pakistan was represented by Attorney General of Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan.
Pakistan outlined the dire effects of climate change on its population and economy, with Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan telling the hearing that a third of the country would be submerged in the 2022 floods.
33 million people were affected by the floods, reconstruction costs are estimated to exceed $16 billion, Pakistan accounts for less than one percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.
He further stated that due to the effects of climate change, Pakistan is facing 15 times more damage than other countries. Should include climate finance, mitigation and cooperation.
Disputes related to treaty obligations should be resolved through mechanisms established within those treaties.
