US-Panama canal Controversy: Former US President Donald Trump’s comment about taking back control over the Panama Canal has created an international controversy. Trump recently said that America made a mistake by handing over the Panama Canal to its Central American ally. Panamanian President Jose Raul Mulino lodged a strong protest, calling it an insult to his country’s sovereignty, while Colombian President Gustavo Petro also supported Panama’s sovereignty.
Trump talked about considering the possibility of annexation, citing “unfair” tariffs on the canal connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. He gave this statement during a rally organized in Arizona after his election victory. He raised the issue of control of the canal along with promises like rapid growth of the American economy and stopping wars in West Asia and Ukraine.
Trump’s thoughts: America’s golden age
Trump said in his address, “America’s golden age is before us.” He talked about efforts to unite all citizens and also called upon the leaders of the Democratic Party to join this initiative.
Historical importance of Panama Canal
The Panama Canal was built by the United States in the early 1900s to facilitate the movement of commercial and military ships between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Under a treaty signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1977, the US handed over control of the canal to Panama in 1999.
Challenges related to Panama Canal
The efficiency of the Panama Canal depends on reservoirs. Due to drought in 2023, the number of ships had to be limited, which increased the pressure on the canal. Additionally, Panama increased transit fees, which are likely to remain in place next year.
Strong reaction from the President of Panama
Panamanian President Mulino rejected Trump’s comment, calling it an attack on the country’s sovereignty. “Every square meter of the Panama Canal belongs to our country and will always remain so,” he said. Mulino stressed the solidarity of Panama and clarified that the canal fee was used to fund reforms. Colombian President Gustavo Petro supported Panama’s sovereignty, saying, “We are ready to talk trade, but will never compromise on respect and dignity.”
