The senior US official could have been making an attempt to show she will get away with something, Russia’s overseas minister stated
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has condemned US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s journey to Taiwan, branding it a show of American disregard for worldwide norms.
“It was the drive to prove to everyone their impunity and to act accordingly. ‘I do whatever I want’, something like that,” the minister informed journalists on Wednesday. “I can hardly imagine any other reason to create a flashpoint out of thin air, despite knowing what it would mean for China.”
Pelosi arrived on the self-governed Chinese island on Tuesday and met its chief Tsai Ing-wen, regardless of repeated warnings from Beijing to remain away. The third highest-ranking US official praised Taiwan as a fellow “democracy” and pledged American help for it towards “autocratic” China.
Washington formally acknowledges that Taiwan is a part of China, however maintains a detailed casual relationship with its administration regardless of switching diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979.
The Chinese authorities has repeatedly stated that journeys by US officers encourage separatist forces on the island and thus violate China’s territorial integrity.
Amid the uncertainty final week over whether or not Pelosi’s then-rumored go to to Taiwan would happen, China warned that the US was “playing with fire” and that there will likely be penalties, if it occurred.
The Chinese navy has since launched a large navy train near Taiwan – which the island’s authorities claimed just about amounted to a blockade – and imposed some commerce restrictions, banning Taiwanese corporations from shopping for sand and promoting some meals merchandise.
