New Delhi: After the approval of a controversial amendment bill in India’s Lok Sabha, there has been a series of strong protests across the country. Opposition parties, Muslim organizations and human rights groups have launched a protest movement, calling the bill a conspiracy against minorities and a violation of the constitution.
According to Indian media, protests broke out in several cities including Kolkata, Ranchi, Ahmedabad, Bihar and Manipur. In just a few hours, people took to the streets in large numbers and shouted ‘Return Bill’.
Police in Ahmedabad tortured the protest and arrested more than 50 protesters. Outside the mosques in Kolkata, Ranchi and Jami, people raised banners and protested peacefully and demanded the return of the bill. Demonstrators said that amending the dedicated bill is an attack on the religious and property rights of minorities. “
The biggest protest was recorded in Manipur, where there is already intense hatred against the Modi government. Protesters rejected the bill and called it a “sectarian agenda”.
Police are on high alert in Uttar Pradesh and additional forces have been deployed in sensitive districts like Lucknow, Sambhal, Bahraich, Muradabad, Muzaffarnagar, and Saharanpur.
On the other hand, several political leaders have filed petitions in the Indian Supreme Court and the High Courts, demanding that the bill be declared unconstitutional and demanded immediately.
