RSS flag at Ram temple, fears of minorities in India heightened

A new debate on the Hindutva narrative and minorities in India intensified after the RSS flag hoisting ceremony at the Ram temple in Ayodhya was criticized by various quarters.

Critics say that the growing closeness of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the RSS is becoming a cause of concern for minorities, especially Muslims.

According to critics, the construction of the Ram temple and the martyrdom of the Babri Masjid were used for political purposes and the sentiments of religious minorities were ignored by dressing it up as a national celebration. Critics further allege that the establishment of the Ram temple was made possible under the ideological influence of the RSS and the BJP.

Addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that this occasion of Ayodhya is an important milestone in the cultural history of India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also called it “the beginning of a new era”, saying that the Ram temple is a symbol of national pride for 140 crore Indian citizens.

However, various political and social circles of India are calling this development as a cause of concern among the minorities. Critics say that growing religious polarization and Hindutva thinking in India are posing threats to minority rights and religious freedoms.
