Ukraine War: Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday (January 24) that if Donald Trump’s victory in 2020 had not been snatched away, the Ukraine war could have been avoided. Speaking to the media, Putin said that Russia’s attack on Ukraine in February 2022 was a crisis that could have been prevented from happening during Trump’s presidency. He said, “If Trump’s victory in 2020 had not been snatched away, perhaps this crisis of 2022 would not have happened.”
Putin praised Donald Trump, calling him a “smart and practical person”. He said that if Trump had been in power, it would have been possible to negotiate with America to end the war. Putin also said that Russia is always ready for compromise on Ukraine issue. He said, “We have always said and I repeat again that we are ready for talks on the Ukraine issue.”
Russia calls Kyiv government an “illegal regime”
However, Putin’s statements do not match the recent statement of the Russian Foreign Ministry. The ministry condemned arms supplies to Ukraine from Western countries, calling the Kiev government an “illegal regime.” The statement said, “Despite talk of peace talks, no real preparation of any kind is being seen from the West and Kiev.”
Ukraine opposes Putin-Trump talks
The office of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected Putin-Trump talks, saying that no peace talks are possible without the participation of European representatives. Zelensky’s office said broad participation is necessary to end the war.
Trump claims to end the war in 24 hours
Trump had earlier claimed that if he had been in power, he could have ended the Russia-Ukraine war in 24 hours. However, despite his becoming President, the war continues. Experts believe that Trump can try to reach a peace agreement by putting pressure on both Russia and Ukraine. Trump had earlier warned that if Russia was not ready for talks, he would impose tough sanctions and increase the supply of arms to Ukraine.
