New Zealand’s five-wicket win over Bangladesh in the Champions Trophy has brought an end to Pakistan’s journey in the tournament.
Pakistan, led by Muhammad Rizwan, managed to stay in the competition for just five days, marking a short-lived campaign. With their exit from the title race, Sarfraz Ahmed became the longest-serving captain to hold the Champions Trophy title.
On June 18 2017, under Ahmed’s leadership, Pakistan won the Champions Trophy by defeating India, and the team held the title for a total of 2,808 days. However, their defence of the title ended early, as they were eliminated from the race on the sixth day of the event.
Before Sarfraz, Ricky Ponting of Australia held the record for the longest title reign as captain. Ponting led Australia to back-to-back victories in 2006 and 2009, holding the trophy for 2,422 days. The title was eventually claimed by India under MS Dhoni’s captaincy in June 2013.
