Several lacking after landslide on Italian vacation island


Heavy rains lashed southern Ischia island, inflicting floods and triggering a landslide, leaving 100 stranded.

A landslide triggered by heavy rains on the Italian vacation island of Ischia has dragged vehicles into the ocean, precipitated homes to break down, left dozens stranded and several other lacking.

There have been deaths feared, however authorities ministers contradicted themselves over a potential loss of life toll.

Speaking from the firefighters’ emergency coordination centre, inside minister Matteo Piantedosi mentioned on Saturday that no deaths had been confirmed.

“At the moment there are no confirmed deaths, there are some difficulties in the rescue operations because the weather conditions are still challenging,” Piantedosi advised reporters in Rome.

However, Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini mentioned earlier that eight folks had been killed.
