Yangon: A 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar devastated, killing 2,719 people and injuring 4,521. According to officials, the number of casualties could exceed 3,000.
The earthquake came on Friday afternoon and proved to be the largest natural disaster of a hundred years, in which ancient pagoda and modern buildings were destroyed.
There is a severe shortage of water, food and medical assistance in the affected areas, while the people are forced to spend the night in the streets and open fields for fear of the earthquake.
According to the UN, 50 children and 2 teachers were killed when a pre -school building collapsed in Mandala. Rescue organizations are trying to provide basic needs to the victims, but civil war rescue operations in the country are hindering.
The civil war in Myanmar has been hindering aid to the earthquake victims since the 2021 military coup. Amnesty International has called on the Myanmar army to ensure access to humanitarian aid in the affected areas. On the other hand, rebel groups alleged that the army continued airstrikes even after the earthquake.
The effects of the earthquake were also witnessed in Myanmar’s neighboring Thailand. An incomplete skyscraper collapsed in Bangkok, killing 13 people and missing 74. Rescue teams are busy searching for 70 people under the rubble, but after four days, hopes of survival are diminishing.
The investigation revealed that non -standard steel was used in the construction of the building, on which the government has launched an investigation.
