South Korea: The South Korean Parliament impeached acting President Han Duk-soo on Friday (December 27). For this, voting was done in the Parliament, after which the country’s Finance Minister Choi San-mok has been made the acting President. Earlier on Friday, a session started and the process of impeachment was started. According to Reuters report, Han Duck-soo was the Prime Minister before becoming the acting President, who was elected acting President in place of President Yoon Suk Yeol.
However, on December 14, President Yoon Suk Yeol was removed as president. After this all powers were taken away from him. On December 3, the charge of imposing martial law in the country was proved against him, due to which a political stir was created. Today, during the impeachment process, Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung said in his speech in Parliament that it is necessary to eliminate the rebel forces to normalize the country.
Public anger against martial law
The Democratic Party said Han had overstepped his bounds by refusing to fill the vacancy on the Constitutional Court. Earlier public opinion polls conducted following martial law attempts had shown overwhelming public support for the removal of President Yun Suk Yeol from office.
How would voting for impeachment take place?
According to South Korean law, the voting process for impeachment requires a simple majority for the Prime Minister and two-thirds majority for the President. After Han’s suspension, Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok has been given the responsibility of assuming the post of acting President. However, earlier Choi had warned that impeachment would seriously damage the country’s economic stability and credibility.
