Nigeria Suicide Attack: At least 27 Nigerian soldiers have been killed in a jihadist suicide attack in Nigeria’s north-eastern region. According to news agency AFP, soldiers launched a ground attack on a hideout of terrorists linked to the Islamic State (ISIS) in a wasteland located between Burno and Yobe states.
“The suicide attack killed 27 soldiers, including the commander, and seriously injured many others,” a military official told AFP.
This attack was one of the deadliest suicide attacks targeting the army in recent years. Another officer said that there was darkness at the time of the attack, due to which the soldiers could not see clearly all around. He also said that the number of injured could increase, as the condition of some was “critical”.
Attacked by suicide bomber
A suicide bomber hid his explosive-laden vehicle in dense bushes and rammed into a convoy of soldiers who were moving for an operation against the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP). This attack took place in the ‘Timbuktu Triangle’ area, which was earlier under the control of Boko Haram.
ISWAP broke away from Boko Haram in 2016 and became the main terrorist group in the north-east. It has now annexed areas held by Boko Haram, including the Timbuktu Triangle and the Sambisa Forest. This group targets soldiers by planting roadside mines and filling vehicles with explosives. Seven soldiers were killed in an attack in July when their vehicle hit a mine.
civil war in nigeria
This conflict is now 15 years old, in which approximately 40,000 people have been killed and more than 2 million people have been displaced. The violence has also spread to Nigeria’s neighboring countries, such as Niger, Chad and Cameroon, resulting in these countries forming a regional force to fight the terrorists.
