Amid the civil war in Syria, a Syrian newspaper named Al Watan reported that the leader of the rebel group, Abu Mohammed al-Julani, has been killed in an attack on the headquarters of Tahrir al-Sham in Idlib. HTS is the largest group fighting against the Syrian regime and Iran-backed militias. It has captured many villages in the areas of Idlib, Aleppo and Hama. The current commander of this group is Abu Mohammad al-Julani. Julani has also been close to Abu Musab al-Zarqawi in Al Qaeda. Julani was arrested by the US military, but was released in 2008. After this, in 2012, he founded Jabhat al-Nusra and started fighting against the Assad regime in Syria.

Regarding the ongoing civil war in Syria, Professor Eyal Jisr of Israel’s Tel Aviv University says on the current situation in Syria, ‘At present the regime of Bashar al-Assad is in a weak position. The rebel capture of Aleppo is a major blow to the Assad regime due to the city’s size and economic importance. The Assad regime is now relying heavily on its allies to confront the rebels, but Russian airstrikes alone will not be enough to repel the rebels.
