Crackdown On Black Magic In Tajikistan: Tajikistan has recently launched a harsh crackdown against witchcraft, divination, and “witches”. The government is calling this practice an illegal activity and considering it against the country’s tradition and Islamic values. President Emomali Rakhmon has clearly stated that witchcraft and divination promote illegal religious teachings and fraud.
More than 1,500 people have been arrested on charges of witchcraft and prophecy. More than 5,000 mullahs were also arrested, who were claiming cure through prayer. Repeat offenders can face up to two years in jail and a fine of $13,300. This fine is equal to six years’ salary of an average Tajik citizen.

People claim to resolve disputes and make predictions through beads, muttered mantras, and other practices. The allure of witchcraft in Tajikistan is not limited to superstition. It is also linked to poverty and social inequality.

Conventional medicine is expensive, while astrology and alternative medicine are affordable. “It is cheaper than conventional medicine, which is very expensive,” said housewife Gulbakhor. Sociologist Mehrigul Ablyazova believes that social inequality and lack of health services push people towards alternative means. These practices are linked to pre-Islamic traditions, which are still deeply rooted in Central Asia.

Experts say repression alone cannot completely end these practices. Unless public services and welfare schemes are improved, people will continue to take alternative routes.
