Shariful Islam Shahzad, a Bangladeshi citizen arrested for the attack on Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan, has allegedly confessed to the crime.
According to Indian media reports, police sources say that 30-year-old Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad said in the confessional statement, “Yes, I did the attack.”
During the 70-hour manhunt following the attack on Saif Ali Khan, significant progress has been made in the case.
Muhammad Shariful Islam Shehzad was arrested from a labor camp located in a forest area about 35 km from Saif Ali Khan’s house in Mumbai’s Bandra area. The arrest came after a 7-hour operation based on information provided by a labor contractor.
A senior police officer told the Indian media that during the investigation, the accused has admitted his crime. According to the police, they got the key clue in the case from the payment made over the phone which helped in tracking down the accused.
Police said the accused had breakfast at a hotel, bought parathas and a bottle of water and paid the bill through his mobile instead of cash, which gave police access to his mobile number.
It may be recalled that Shariful Islam Shahzad was produced in a court in Mumbai yesterday, where his lawyer told the court that the allegations against the accused are baseless and nothing objectionable was found with his client.
The lawyer claimed that the case is getting more attention due to the involvement of a celebrity and that his client is being made a scapegoat. Later speaking to the media, the lawyer reiterated the same position that there is no evidence against Shariful Islam.
It should be noted that the court has given the accused in the custody of the city police for 5 days.
