Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has said that the threats and challenges facing the UN peacekeeping missions need to be overcome.
In a special message on the International Day of the UN Peace Troops, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said, “Today we are celebrating the International Day of UN peacekeepers with the international community.” This day is not only a reminder of the numerous sacrifices made by the UN peacekeepers in the pursuit of international peace and security, but also acknowledging the important role of these peace friends for a peaceful, stable and prosperous world.
In his message, he said that more than 235,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served in 48 UN missions around the world in the history of the UN peacekeeping mission, while 181 Pakistani peacekeepers have sacrificed their lives in achieving international peace and security.
This day is a suitable opportunity to examine many challenges facing the UN peacekeeping army, such as growing unilateral policies, financial sanctions, increasing threats to UN peacekeepers, increasing threats to security and security -based UN peacekeeping and new technologies.
The Prime Minister said that today, I urge the international community to reaffirm its commitment to successful UN policies to maintain international peace and security and double the UN peacekeeping efforts to adapt to these rapidly emerging challenges.
Shahbaz Sharif said that in efforts to resolve these challenges, Pakistan, along with the Republic of Korea, jointly hosted the UN peacekeeping meeting in Islamabad on April 15-16, 2025, whose theme of ‘a safe and more effective peace: the use of technology and integrated view’.
Pakistan, India and Pakistan also hosted the UN military observer group (UNMOGIP), one of the oldest UN peacekeepers, which has been assigned to monitor the ceasefire with the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s UN -recognized disputed territory.
He added that recent events in South Asia have highlighted the need to ensure a fair resolution to the Jammu and Kashmir conflict in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and strengthen the role and presence of UNMogip.
In his message, the Prime Minister said that as a leading military cooperative country and a non -permanent member of the UN Security Council, I today reiterate Pakistan’s commitment and support in all efforts to further strengthen the UN peacekeeping missions.
