
UN On Bangladesh Violence: There was a coup in Bangladesh after the performance of students in July-August last year. Many people lost their lives in this demonstration. The United Nations Human Rights (UN Human Rights) on Wednesday (12 February 2025) accused the then Sheikh Hasina government of attacking the protesters and conspiring to commit murder. The UN has speculated that around 1400 people were killed during the action against the protesters protesting against Sheikh Hasina.
The United Nations report explained in detail how the government along with the violent elements of Awami League party and security services attacked protesters and other citizens. The UN said that there is a need to investigate against Sheikh Hasina, who was involved in the violation of security and intelligence service rights.
Sheikh Hasina’s hand in spreading violence
According to the Times of India report, the United Nations Human Rights Finding Team was called to Bangladesh for investigation at the request of Mohammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh. The UN claimed that an investigation conducted on the basis of over 230 interviews and documents revealed that during the violence spread in Bangladesh, security forces had consistently supported Sheikh Hasina’s administration.
1400 people died in Bangladesh- UN
The UN report has estimated about 1,400 people casualties in 45 days. Security forces were held responsible for most of the deaths, with 12–13 per cent children. The United Nations’ Rights Head Volcar Turk described it as a well-planned strategy to maintain power. He said that during the protest, judicial killings, arbitrary arrests were done. Bangladesh’s International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) last month issued a warrant against Sheikh Hasina and 11 others including former military generals and a former police chief.
